A Republican, Javier Villalobos, won the mayoral runoff election Saturday in McAllen, Texas, an important Rio Grande Valley border town dealing with the consequences of mass illegal immigration. The ex-Hidalgo County GOP chairman won the officially nonpartisan election in the city of more than 100,000 people, which is reportedly more than 80 percent Hispanic.
Lawyer and city commissioner Villalobos defeated Veronica Vela Whitacre, the McAllen mayor pro tem. Villalobos won approximately 51 percent of the vote, winning the election by 206 votes.
Javier Villalobos has stressed the need to keep McAllen safe from migrant crime, saying, “Look, our concern is public safety. We don’t want them to get hurt, and we definitely don’t want them to hurt any of our residents. If you don’t have control, you’re going to have violence, you will have burglaries, you will have thefts, you will have other things that I don’t even want to talk about.”
The border crisis is emboldening Republican voters, and law and order is clearly an objective that many voters want as the Biden regime pushes open-borders globalism for the United States of America.
