Shock: GOP Landslide in Blue New York

Republicans raked in sweeping elections wins in Long Island on Tuesday, making gains that New York’s political establishment didn’t expect.

Republicans won county executive and comptroller races in Nassau County, a blue-leaning bellwether that President Joe Biden won by 10 points in the 2020 presidential election.

The wins amount to historic Republican gains in a traditionally liberal-leaning area of a blue state. Long Island isn’t anywhere as progressive as New York City, but the area voted for Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

Republican District Attorney candidates defeated Democratic competitors in Nassau and Suffolk counties, the two largest in Long Island. Longtime assistant prosecutor Anne Donnelly and Ray Tierney cited their Democrat opponents’ support of state bail reform legislation, which has allowed individuals charged with serious violent crimes to quickly leave the jail system before standing trial, at times offending yet again.
