The advisory, provided by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), urges travelers to familiarize themselves with local laws, specifically referencing the new laws enacted in conservative-leaning states.
The advisory encourages travelers to be aware of state and local laws that may affect individuals within the 2SLGBTQI+ community. The GAC statement highlights that since the beginning of 2023, certain U.S. states have implemented legislation that bans certain types of performances, restricts access to gender-affirming care, and addresses participation in sports based on gender identity. The spokesperson from GAC acknowledges that laws and customs regarding sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression can vary significantly between countries.
In recent times, more than 20 U.S. states have introduced laws that prohibit medical procedures like cross-sex hormones or puberty blockers for minors, as well as surgeries that involve gender transition, such as mastectomies for girls identifying as boys. These laws have predominantly emerged across the Southern and Midwestern regions of the country. Additionally, some states have passed legislation aimed at ensuring equitable participation in sports and regulating the availability of explicit content in educational settings.
Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland emphasized that the updated travel guidance is intended to prioritize the safety and interests of Canadian citizens.
