Watch: Blinken Betrays Taiwan’s Independence in China

During his visit to Beijing, Secretary of State Antony Blinken clarified the United States’ stance on Taiwan, emphasizing that the U.S. does not support Taiwan independence. Blinken stated that the U.S. remains opposed to any unilateral changes to the status quo by either side and expects a peaceful resolution of their differences. However, he also reiterated the commitment to ensure that Taiwan has the ability to defend itself. Blinken’s visit marked the first time a U.S. cabinet-level official has traveled to China since 2019, and it concluded with an unexpected meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

President Joe Biden has previously made conflicting statements regarding U.S. policy toward Taiwan, creating uncertainty. While he mentioned in 2022 that the U.S. would come to Taiwan’s defense in the event of a Chinese invasion, these remarks were later clarified by the White House. This inconsistency has added to the complexity of the situation.

Tensions between the United States and China have been escalating, with numerous war games revealing the U.S.’s unpreparedness for a potential conflict. Close encounters between Chinese and American ships and planes have also been reported. Against this backdrop, Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in April, defying pressure from China. McCarthy emphasized that he would not allow China to dictate his actions or restrict his engagements.

China strongly opposes visits by foreign officials to Taiwan, considering them a challenge to its claim of control over the island. In response to Speaker McCarthy’s meeting with President Tsai, China expressed firm opposition and promised resolute measures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. These actions and statements demonstrate China’s sensitivity to any perceived U.S.-Taiwan collusion.

It is worth noting that China has previously reacted strongly to visits by U.S. officials to Taiwan, including conducting large-scale military drills and launching a missile over the island. These incidents underscore the volatile nature of the Taiwan issue and the potential for it to escalate into a larger conflict.

In the midst of these complex dynamics, Secretary Blinken’s visit aimed to clarify the United States’ position and seek avenues for peaceful resolution. The U.S. continues to navigate a delicate balance between supporting Taiwan’s defense capabilities while avoiding actions that might provoke further tensions with China.
