You Won’t Believe This: Only 18% Proud Americans

Is American patriotism facing a significant identity crisis, particularly among the younger generation? It certainly appears so, as recent Gallup poll results reveal a concerning decline in national pride, especially among those aged 18-34. Only a mere 18% of young adults in this age group now declare themselves as “extremely proud” to be American, which stands in stark contrast to the older population, with the 55 and older group being nearly three times more likely to express strong patriotism.

This generational rift in patriotic sentiment is quite striking. Back in 2013, a whopping 85% of those aged 18-29 were proudly embracing their national identity, but that number has significantly dwindled over the years. Political party affiliation also plays a role, with Republicans leading the pride game at 60%, while Democrats and independents lag behind at 29% and 33%, respectively. Nevertheless, even within these political tribes, the younger members remain less enthusiastic about their American identity compared to their elder counterparts.

The decline in American pride has been a gradual process, with significant drops occurring after 9/11 and a steady decline since 2005. This isn’t just an issue of age; party identification plays a significant part as well, contributing to the complexity of the matter.

Interestingly, these poll results coincide with another revelation that two-thirds of U.S. voters believe President Joe Biden, who is 80 years old, may be too old to run for re-election in 2024. The sentiment extends across party lines, with 67% of registered voters expressing doubts about Biden’s ability to serve a second term due to concerns about his mental and physical fitness for the job.

In the Democratic Party, only a third (33%) believe Biden should run again, while a substantial 56% think he should step aside. Meanwhile, younger and vibrant Democrats are emerging on the political scene, potentially challenging Biden for the nomination and presenting a more competitive front against Republican candidates like former President Donald Trump or Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Names like California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have gained attention as the future faces of the Democratic Party. Biden himself has acknowledged the age question but remains steadfast in his pursuit of the presidency.

With patriotic sentiment waning and age concerns surrounding political leadership, the American landscape is indeed going through a transformative phase that could significantly impact the nation’s future trajectory. Conservatives should consider these shifts and engage with the younger generation to instill a renewed sense of pride in the values and principles that have made America great.
