Left-leaning filmmaker Michael Moore, known for his accurate prediction of former President Donald Trump’s 2016 victory, expressed concern this week that President Joe Biden’s support for Israel might cost him the 2024 election.
During an appearance on CNN, Moore reacted to the network’s poll indicating that 81% of U.S. adults under 36 disapprove of Biden’s handling of Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza. He directed a message to the president, emphasizing the significant risk to Biden’s re-election prospects due to these numbers, especially considering the loss of support among young voters and Arab Americans, particularly in Michigan.
Highlighting Michigan’s substantial Arab American population, Moore referenced the primary where over 100,000 Democrats voted “uncommitted” as a form of protest against Biden’s stance on Israel. He stressed the importance of retaining Michigan for Biden’s electoral chances and expressed his efforts to prevent such a loss.
Moore, a fellow Catholic like Biden, invoked religious sentiment by referencing the Pope’s call for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict. He urged Biden to heed this call, emphasizing the need for a change in approach to win back support, especially among critical demographics like young voters and Arab Americans.
Despite facing criticism from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, including members of the “Squad,” Biden has taken a nuanced stance on Israel’s actions while reaffirming strong support for the country. Moore acknowledged the complexities of the conflict, including concerns about civilian safety in Gaza, but he stressed the electoral ramifications of Biden’s current approach.
Moore concluded by warning that if Biden doesn’t alter his stance and address the concerns of key demographics like young voters and Arab Americans, it could lead to losing Michigan and ultimately the election. He emphasized the potential for a Trump victory in 2024 if these issues are not addressed promptly, expressing his determination to prevent a return of Trump to the White House.
