Some GOP Hopefuls Rally Behind Pence’s Stand on January 6

During the recent GOP primary debate, the Republican candidates demonstrated a strong consensus in supporting former Vice President Mike Pence’s actions on January 6, 2021. When asked about Pence’s decision to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election amidst the Capitol riot, the candidates overwhelmingly defended his actions.

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) led the charge in endorsing Pence’s actions, asserting that he unquestionably did the right thing. He emphasized the need to shift the focus towards the larger issue of the Department of Justice’s potential weaponization rather than solely scrutinizing Pence’s decision.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took a forward-looking stance, stressing the importance of moving beyond discussions about the past. He affirmed that Pence fulfilled his duty on that day and expressed no reservations about the former vice president’s conduct. DeSantis maintained that the upcoming 2024 election is centered on the future rather than the events of January 6.

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley echoed her fellow candidates’ support for Pence, acknowledging his decision as the right one. She underlined the significance of giving credit where it is due.

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a former member of the Trump administration, applauded Pence’s commitment to the Constitution. He highlighted Pence’s principled stand in putting the oath of office and the Constitution before personal and political pressures. Christie contended that Pence should be recognized and appreciated for his dedication to upholding the integrity of the Constitution.

Pharmaceutical executive Vivek Ramaswamy, who previously lauded Pence’s actions in his book, did not provide a direct response to the question regarding Pence’s decision during the debate.

Overall, the unified support for Pence’s actions reflects a conservative perspective that prioritizes constitutional principles and the duty of elected officials in challenging circumstances.
