Trump, Youngkin Team Up to Flip Virginia Red!

Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) is putting aside his past differences with former President Donald Trump in a strategic move to turn Virginia red this November. The two are set to hold a rally Friday afternoon in Chesapeake, Virginia, as recent polls indicate a tight race between Trump and President Joe Biden.

The relationship between Youngkin and Trump has been marked by occasional friction. Youngkin made headlines in 2021 when he unexpectedly won the governor’s seat in Virginia, a state many considered a Democratic stronghold. Trump claimed credit for Youngkin’s victory, remarking on social media, “Young Kin (now that’s an interesting take. Sounds Chinese, doesn’t it?) in Virginia couldn’t have won without me.”

Despite Trump’s assertions, Youngkin has maintained a more measured stance regarding Trump’s support. After securing the governorship, Youngkin considered challenging Trump for the presidency and twice declined to appear at Trump rallies in Virginia. In March, he skipped a rally due to a scheduling conflict with a basketball game. In October 2021, he cited prior commitments as the reason for not attending a Trump rally featuring Steve Bannon.

However, with Trump gaining traction in Virginia, Youngkin appears to be realigning with the former president. A Fox News poll showed a dead heat between Trump and Biden, each garnering 48% of the vote—a significant drop for Biden, who won Virginia by 10 points in 2020. Responding to the poll, Youngkin told Fox News that voters “want Trump back in the White House because he built a strong America.” Shortly after, Youngkin and Trump met privately at the Trump National Golf Club in northern Virginia, signaling a potential thaw in their relationship.

Despite the renewed cooperation, Youngkin has made it clear he has no interest in being Trump’s running mate. “It’s my job to finish my time as governor and help him win Virginia,” Youngkin stated, emphasizing his commitment to his current role while supporting Trump’s bid to reclaim the White House. This pragmatic approach reflects Youngkin’s focus on strengthening the Republican presence in Virginia and beyond.
